Born in Kandy, Sri Lanka on 11 July 1948, the second of four children to Richard Clarence and Esmie Marie Audrey Herft.
Educated at Royal College, Colombo, he worked in the commercial sector until 1969. He entered the United Theological College of Lanka in Pilimatalawe (an Ecumenical University sponsored by the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist Churches with close affiliation to the Roman Catholic Seminary in Kandy) obtaining a Bachelor of Theology and a Bachelor of Divinity through the University of Serampore, founded by William Carey, the famous Baptist Missionary in India.

As the Bishop of Newcastle between 1993 and 2005, I have also been called to give account and last week completed my evidence before the Royal Commission. The public hearing has been adjourned, and is scheduled to be completed in Sydney in November, with several witnesses yet to give evidence.
The Anglican Diocese of Perth welcomes the Royal Commission, acknowledges its terms of reference and has assured the Commission of its willingness to assist and cooperate with it. Read more >
